Tanning after laser hair removal – yes or no?
Share
We're often asked whether tanning is necessary after certain aesthetic medicine treatments. Can you tan after laser hair removal? Should you skip tanning in a tanning bed after Botox? We've selected some of the most frequently asked questions and answered them in today's article.
Can you sunbathe after Botox?
One of the most frequently chosen anti-wrinkle treatments, especially for reducing facial wrinkles, is botulinum toxin , also known as Botox . It might seem that since the drug is administered using a very thin syringe, it would have no effect on the skin layers where tanning occurs. However, experts advise avoiding excessive exposure to sunlight or tanning beds, especially for a few days after treatment .
Why? This is due to side effects that some people experience, such as swelling and redness. Experts also point out that it takes a certain amount of time (approximately 10 days) for the botulinum toxin to develop in the muscles. If the body is exposed to the sun earlier, and the temperature increases, the botulinum toxin will decompose faster (even before it begins to work), and the results will not be as satisfactory.
The same principles should be applied to treatments using hyaluronic acid.
Tanning and hair removal – yes or no?
Traditional razor hair removal isn't a contraindication to tanning. On the contrary, it can be considered a form of preparation for tanning. We wrote about other things to remember before tanning HERE . Clean, hair-free skin absorbs UV rays more efficiently, resulting in a more even tanning result.
However, in the case of the recently popular laser hair removal treatment, the issue of tanning is a bit more complicated. This is related to the specific operation of the laser, which emits a beam of light directed at the hair. The laser's effect is more effective the greater the contrast between hair color and skin color, so it is advisable not to build up a tan extensively before this type of treatment.
Many experts recommend laser hair removal during the fall and winter months, when our complexions are generally lighter. But what if, for a special occasion, we need a tan despite having laser hair removal sessions scheduled? That's when self-tanners or spray tans come to the rescue! The resulting tan lasts about a week. After that, you can safely opt for laser hair removal.
We have presented our methods for a quick tan, not only for special occasions, HERE .
It's also worth mentioning hair removal with waxing , sugaring, or an epilator. Given that these treatments involve removing the hair by the root, the skin also needs time to regenerate afterwards, especially if irritation occurs.
Solarium after permanent makeup?
Permanent makeup can be compared to getting a tattoo. Both involve the introduction of pigment, and after each treatment, special caution should be exercised when exposed to the sun or using a tanning bed .
First, you need to patiently wait for your skin to heal. Recovery time varies from person to person, but it's worth consulting with the person who performed the treatment to determine how long it typically takes to be able to enjoy a tanning session.
It's important to choosetanning lotions specifically designed for people with tattoos. We recommend the Tattoo Tanning Accelerator , which contains a blend of extracts that prevent the disintegration of the pigment molecule applied to the skin. This protects tattoos from fading. If you're going to be sunbathing, choose a product with a high level of sun protection (e.g., SPF 50).
Is peeling always recommended?
Peels remove dead, calloused skin, which can be an obstacle to achieving a long-lasting and even tan. However, it's worth remembering that a wide range of exfoliating treatments are currently available, and therefore, recommendations for post-treatment tanning vary.
An example is cavitation peeling , after which a minimum 7-day recovery period is recommended. The situation is similar with one of the most popular types of mechanical peeling, microdermabrasion – here, too, you should wait a few days for the skin to regenerate, otherwise unsightly discoloration may appear.
In summary: not all aesthetic treatments are compatible with sunbathing or tanning in a solarium. Avoid excessive tanning before treatments, as most treatments can only be performed on skin that is free of irritation. To ensure their full effectiveness, we also recommend temporarily limiting exposure to UV radiation. If you have any concerns, we recommend consulting a specialist.
