What is the purpose of the Solarium Act?

In September 2017, the Sejm passed the Solarium Act, which is scheduled to come into force on February 16, 2018. It will introduce a ban on providing access to solariums to persons under 18, a requirement to provide information about the risks of using solariums, and a ban on promoting solariums. What are the reasons for these changes? What are the goals of this act?

Protecting your health from the effects of using a solarium

The main goal of the law is to protect health from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation produced by tanning lamps. Age restrictions for tanning salon customers, a ban on advertising tanning salons, and accurate information about the harmful effects of tanning are intended to reduce the likelihood of negative consequences from tanning and, consequently, improve public health.

It is forbidden for minors to use the solarium

One of the most important provisions of the Solarium Act is the ban on making solariums available to persons under 18. A young person's body is still developing, so it may have a lower resistance to various factors. Therefore, excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation can lead to negative health consequences, such as skin conditions. Remember that if staff have any doubts about a customer's age, they may ask for proof of identity.

Disseminating knowledge about the negative effects of using solariums

The need to post notices in tanning salons about the ban on tanning beds and their harmful effects aims to increase public awareness of the negative effects of indoor tanning. Reliable and verified information ensures safety for both tanning salons and their customers.

Work is currently underway on implementing the act and regulations regarding guidelines for notices to be posted in tanning salons: prohibiting the use of tanning beds by minors and the risks associated with tanning.
